Biomedical IR is a complex problem. The interdisciplinary approach to be explored during this collaborative visit can help discovering hidden biomedical knowledge by combining NLP and CV technologies in IR. It will save time and help clinicians find relevant information to help in the diagnosis mitigating the impacts of a deficit of qualified clinical staff. It may also help to prioritise tasks that truly require the clinician’s attention making it easier for users to work through their to-do lists.

In the context of YERUN Research Mobility award we set up a workshop involving the the most important NLP and IR research groups of the region of Madrid, to foster the exchange of ideas and to further collaboration in biomedical text mining during the collaborative visit focusing on cross-modality biomedical information retrieval.

Due to the COVID-19 restrictions, the workshop took place virtually on 22 June 2021.  The workshop took place in Spanish as this was a common language, and was entitled “Retos para la extracción de Información en texto e imagen” (Challenges for the extraction of information in text and images). The workshop provided a place to explore interdisciplinary approaches to cast this problem. The agenda and the link to the slides of the presentations can be found here.
